Jofra Archer Responds to Steve Smith
England's
Jofra Archer cast a captivating spell at Australian talisman Steve Smith in the
second Ashes Test at Lord's and the batsmen took a bouncer by the throat. The
92.4 mph delivery forced Smith to move away before returning to sell his wicket
to Chris Woakes at a lower cost.
A
concussion prevented Smith from coming back for the second set as Australia
tied for a draw, although he was not fit to play in the third test either. At
Headingley, Ben Stokes hit a ton of games and leveled the series 1-1.
Now
Smith will return to competition in a match against Derbyshire in Manchester on
Thursday. Before his return, Smith downplayed the Archers' threat, saying the
England point guard should not yet send him back to the tests.
"There
was a bit of talk about him incubating my word, but he didn't get me out. He
hit me on the head on a wicket that was a little high and low at Lord's. All
the other bowlers have had more success against me, I think. I faced them a
little bit more, but they all got me out a lot more," Smith said.
But
Archer didn't let Smith win a moral victory.
Responding
to Smith's comments, Archer made an insolent comment when he said that Smith
had to be there to get him out of the room while referring to the bouncer who
had made the Australian star unavailable for the third Ashes Test 2019.
Archer,
who claimed to have made his first five-gate turn at Headingley, said he would
not focus on individual battles, but on helping England win the Ashes.
"Well,
I can't get him out if he wasn't there. But he'll have plenty of time to get him
out. "I'm
not saying I'm not going to get him out, but if he doesn't, there are ten other
people we can fire, and if he fails at 40, it doesn't help his team much. He
can't do it all himself. We want to win the game. I'm not here to compete with
a man. I want to win the ashes,
