Ravi Shastri Re-appointed as Indian Cricket Team’s Coach
Former Indian cricketer Ravi
Shastri re-elected as head coach of the men's cricket team, a cricket selection
panel announced the news on Friday.
Publicly backed by Indian skipper
Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri, 57-years-old, is always the favorite coach for Virat
Kohli.
He saw competition from former
Indian all-rounder Robin Singh, former team manager Lalchand Rajput, former New
Zealand coach Mike Hesson, Australian cricket coach Tom Moody and former West
Indies coach Phil Simmons.
Simmons withdrew from the
interview at the last minute, the PTI news agency reported.
The remaining applicants
interviewed by a three-member panel of the cricket advisory committee. The Committee
includes World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, former national coach Anshuman Gaekwad, and former women's team captain Shantha Rangaswamy.
Dev announced the decision at a
press conference on Friday.
After losing the coach's job to
Anil Kumble in 2016, Ravi Shastri selected as coach-in-chief of the team a year
later for a period stretching until the end of the 2019 World Cup.
They gave it a 45-day extension
for the current West Indies tour.
Ravi Shastri trained India for a
historic first win in the Australian series of tests earlier this year after
test losses in South Africa and England.
Since taking the job, India has
won 13-Test of 21, 25 out of 36 T20 matches and 43 of 60 ODI.
Ravi Shashtri was an all-terrain
team best known as part of the winning team of the 1983 World Cup and his man
of the series in the triumph of the World Championship of India in Australia in
1985.
He was also a team principal from
2014 to 2016.
Ravi Shastri played 80 one-day
and 150 Test Matches for India before becoming a successful TV
commentator.
